Roof_gardenGreen Roof Information

Installed in November 2006

Description:

  • Modules made of High Density Polyethylene Knit Fabric (Green Paks)
  • Each one is approximately 4.5 sq feet in coverage.
  • About 4 inches of fill, including Coconut Coir and Expanded Shale.
  • Weighs about 11 pounds dry, 17 pounds saturated, each (plus weight of plants)

You should check with an engineer to make certain that your particular roof will support any roof system that you plan to install.

We have done some experimenting with plant material that will take our very hot summers, the best plants seem to be those that grow quickly enough to cover their own roots by summer before the heat really kicks in.

Here are some that have done well for us:

  • Portulaca and Purslane
  • Bulbine frutescens
  • Dianthus gratianopolitanus 'Firewitch'
  • Delosperma cooperi 'Hardy Iceplant'
  • Melampodium leucanthum 'Blackfoot Daisy'
  • Sedum Mexicana and Blue Spruce
  • Dalea greggi

We have recently planted the following and are awaiting results:

  • Occasional Small Agaves & Cactus, Bulbs like Rainlilies, or other plants that flower and take the heat & drought, Dichondra argentea 'Silver Pony Foot'.
  • We noticed that most of the Sempervivums and Sedums did not do as well as expected.
  • Don’t forget hand water or install a drip system for the hot summer months!!

Benefits of Green Roofs

These roofs save energy by reducing the temperature in the buildings below as well as heat radiated from the roof itself. They conserve rain water runoff, extend the life of your roof (by as much as double) and reduce the heating effect caused by hot roofs in our neighborhood.
