October Gardening
- Color your world! Time to plant fall color for your garden: pansies, snapdragons, dianthus, violas, English daisy, stock, primrose, cyclamen, flowering cabbage, and kale.
- You will reap great rewards next Spring by planting shrubs now.
- Plant bulbs now for beautiful Spring color--Narcissus and Hyacinths are good choices. Soil amendments include a mixture of bone meal, worm castings, and rock phosphate.
- Aid your appetite for fresh garden variety: plant carrots, radish, lettuce, spinach, greens, parsley, and peas.
- When doing fall planting, incorporate lava sand into your soil for better aeration. It helps to loosen our hard clay soil.
- This is no prediction, but should the weather drop below 35 degrees, bring all your tropicals inside. Feed them with Bioform once a month and next Spring, cut back and return to the yard.
- For a Lush, Green Lawn all winter, over-seed now with Annual or Perennial Rye Seed.
- Time to seed wildflowers! Water to get established and during periods of no rain. Great to fill in bare spots in the yard.
- Got Cabbage Loopers on your veggies? Try Bacillus thuringiensis dust or spray for a safe and effective alternative.
- Got Brown Patch on your St. Augustine? Try an organic approach, Actinovate Beneficial Soil Bacteria that will enhance the plant vitality and help it fend off disease and pest problems, naturally. Cornmeal and compost are helpful, too!
- Feed the Birds!!!
