November Gardening

  • Plant Fall annuals for color in the garden: Alyssum, Calendula, Bluebonnets, Candytuft, Carnation, Cyclamen, Dianthus, Ornamental Cabbage and Kale, Pansy, Primrose, Snapdragons & Stock.
  • Plant fall bulbs now for beautiful Spring color--like Aztec Lily, Ground Orchid, Crinum, Daffodil, Hymerocallis, Ipheion, Dutch Iris, Ixia, Leucojum, Sprazis, Cluziana Tulips, Paperwhites, Narcissus and others. Not sure how deep to plant? General rule of thumb: plant twice as deep as the width of the bulb.
  • Plant veggies like Carrots, Chard, Lettuce, Mustard, Radish, Spinach & Turnip.
  • Plant strawberry plants and fertilize with a 3-1-2 ratio. Keep moist for better production next spring.
  • Plant herbs like Borage, Burnet, Caraway, Catnip, Chamomile, Chervil, Chives, Comfrey, Coriander, Cumin, Dill, Fennel, Lemon Balm, Mint, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary, Sage & Thyme.
  • Clip back Chysanthemums after flowering (almost to the ground).
  • Prepare beds for roses to be planted in December and January.
  • Clean flower beds and rework to prepare them for spring planting. Be sure to remove debris from flower beds and gardens to control diseases and insects.
  • Should the weather forecast predict a drop below 35 degrees, bring all your tropicals inside. Feed them with Bioform once a month and next Spring, cut back and return to the yard.
  • Average first freeze date is November 28th. Outdoor plants should be watered before a freeze but avoid overwatering!
  • Plant shrubs and trees now!
  • Still a good time to seed wildflowers! Don't forget the Bluebonnets!
  • Fertilize your lawn so it can withstand the winter. Always use a slow-releasing form of nitrogen! Don't over-do phosphorus and potassium as they can build up in our local soils.
  • Put out your birdfeeders!
