March Gardening
If you think we are safe from any more frosts, (March 7th is the traditional last frost day), then go ahead and plant your annual spring flowers!
Plant the following veggies now:
- Can Start Early March: Broccoli, Cabbage, Endive, Mustard, Parsley, Peas (garden)
- Plant After March 15th: Beets, Black Eyed Peas, Sweet Corn, Cantaloupe, Cucumber, Eggplant, Pepper Plants, Pumpkin, New Zealand Spinach, Summer & Winter Squash, Tomato Plants.
- Plant Anytime in March: Bean (Lima, Snap Pole & Snap Bush) Chard, Collards, Endive, Leaf Lettuce, Mustard, Okra, Radishes. Select the best varieties for our area!
- Spray or dust your cabbage and broccoli with Dipel (a.k.a. Thuricide & B.T.) to safely control loopers.
- If you haven't already, put out a bird feeder, and don't forget the suet! Spray your roses with neem oil to prevent black spot.
- Try Garden-Glo as a top-dressing on all of your roses, perennials and flowering shrubs now!
- Great time to plant trees and shrubs!
- Blast the aphids away with a heavy water spray! Keep the slugs clear with a jar lid of beer! (bury it to ground level and the slugs and snails will just jump in - too easy!)
- Release beneficial insects - in stock now your ladybugs & praying mantis. We can order green lacewings , earthworms and other garden helpers, too!
- Before you plant your seed, try soaking them in a solution of Maxicrop Seaweed - they will sprout much faster!
