Holiday Gift Ideas for the Gardener
December has come around awfully fast. Many of the things I had planned to get done in November did not get done. I have not planted lettuce yet, luckily lettuce and spinach can still be planted in December. I have not put the plastic on the greenhouse yet, so a couple nights ago I had to pick and choose which of the warm season plants to cover with life saving n-sulate. And I have not started my Christmas shopping.
I am a procrastinator, and every year I end up paying more to mail the gifts than I paid for the gifts. And sometimes the gift still ends up getting there after Christmas.
To help you with gift ideas for any plant geeks on your list I asked our plant geeks here at The Great Outdoors what they wanted for Christmas.
Some want more plants. Alex wants a staghorn fern and Rene wants a potted citrus. Chris wants another grow light so he can put more plants in his dark apartment.
Others want yard decor. Amber who's a proud Texan wants Texas themed yard art like metal agaves and talavera armadillos. Merrideth wants a Gnome-Be-Gone. These metal gremlins can best be described as not your grandmother's yard art. They steal garden gnomes, tear apart plastic flamingos and guzzle wine. Merrideth's taste is a bit eccentric but Brandi's taste is ....weird. Last year she was on a carnival kick and she requested I order lots of elephants, monkeys and giraffes for the garden center. We even found plant ferris wheels. I'm a little worried what this year's theme will be, because her answer to the Christmas wish question was a statue of a prairie dog family. I should of known, she has them displayed right at the cash register. Kelly wants a deck of botanical themed playing cards, the mushroom ones. We store used a box and employees have been playing cards in the teahouse above the waterfall after work.
Nicole wants a mortar and pestle, which would be a great gift to add some packets of herb seeds to. As for me, I need a new hand trowel (mine disappeared under a dump truck delivery of flower & garden soil and never resurfaced) but I would rather see a mushroom grow kit under the tree this year.
An idea for out of town plant geeks, google garden centers in their home town to find a shop near them. Most garden centers will mail out gift card.
